Precision Powder Coating
Complete your metal fabrication project with this high-quality finishing technique.
What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is a finishing process in which dry particles are sprayed on surfaces electrostatically and then cured with heat or ultraviolet light. This method differs greatly from liquid coatings because it results in a seamless look and a more durable finish. Typically, it is only used on metal components but in some cases, other materials can be used depending on the curing method used. Common examples of powder-coated items in everyday life include.
- Car parts
- Motorcycles
- Bicycles
- Golf carts
- Lawn mowers
- Tractors
- Computer casings
- Filing cabinets
- Sink fixtures
- Vent covers
- Outdoor grills
- Patio furniture
How does Powder Coating Work?
Developing powder paint itself is a multi-step process. First, all of the ingredients are mixed together and then heated. Next, they are rolled flat until cooled and hardened, then broken into smaller pieces. Finally, these pieces are ground down even further into a powder.
There are different specifications of powder paint that can be used for particular applications, but the coating steps generally include: cleaning and pre-treating the metal to ensure the powder will adhere to it, spraying the powder onto the part using a special type of electrostatic gun tool, and finally curing it for a specific amount of time and at a set temperature in a large oven. As it cures, the powder melts together to form a uniform protective coating around the entire surface of the part.
What are the Benefits of Powder Coating?
- Produces more uniform products with fewer flaws and discrepancies.
- Faster and can be performed at a larger scale than other methods.
- More durable and resists scratching, fading, cracking, chipping, and rusting.
- Produces less pollution and can be more cost-efficient.
